Whether it’s for work or fun, I seem to spend more and more time looking at screens and this typically happens when sitting on my butt!
It’s a fact that we move less today than we ever have in history.
The same is true for our children – they play outside way less than the pre-digital generations did.
Check out the really sobering and helpful infographic below to find out why this is a PROBLEM for us all!
It’s pretty sobering stuff.
I posted that here, as it’s an interesting piece of evidence that ‘tech stuff’ can hugely affect us spiritually – ie. it could cut our lives short!
As you know I’m a HUGE fan of all things ‘cyber’ so this isn’t me getting negative about technology.
Rather I’m just aware, through warnings like this one, that there are elements about cyberstuff that can be detrimental to us. Like eye strain from too many hours staring at a screen. Or sitting down all day at a computer, then spending your leisure time sitting down at a computer. Or RSI (repetitive strain injury) from typing and ouse use (which I struggle with in my right hand).
If technology damages our health, it’s also damaging our spirituality. And it’s worth us being aware of that, so we can prevent it.
The deeper into cyber stuff I get, the more I’m sitting at my desk staring at my laptop, or walking around tapping at my iPhone. I have to remind myself to take breaks. And to have time that is gadget and computer free! Otherwise I will be risking my health, by sitting down all day and evening, and subjecting my eyes to about 12 hours of screen time.
Watching the movie “Avatar” was a good reminder that human were invented to run, hunt, swim and be in the great outdoors. No one in our ancestry would have sat at a ‘desk’ all day, static and motionless. The health warning above, says that even if we’re getting 30 minutes of exercise a day, it’s not enough. Yikes! I need to be more pro-active about making exercise and getting outside, a bigger part of my typical day.
Over to you:
- Do you sit down for most of your working day?
- How about in the evenings?
